Protect a PDF with a password

Password-protect your PDF with AES-256 encryption – the password never leaves your device.

How can I check that nothing is uploaded?

Your files are processed in this browser tab. This page has no function that sends files to a server, and its security rules (Content Security Policy) forbid connections to other servers.

Check it yourself: load this page, then switch on flight mode or disconnect Wi-Fi and run the tool. It still works – because everything happens on your device.

Good to know

How it works – step by step
  1. Choose your PDF

Select one or more PDFs. They all get the same password.

  2. Set a password

Type a password or let the tool generate a strong one. The meter shows how good it is. If you like, also restrict printing, copying or changes.

  3. Protect and save

Tap “Protect”. Download the encrypted PDF or share it right away.

Why FaLe?
  • AES-256

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256 – the current PDF standard. Without the password the content cannot be read.

  • Your password stays on your device

Encryption happens in your browser. Neither the password nor the file is sent anywhere or stored.

  • Strong passwords with a tap

The generator uses your browser’s secure random number generator and creates readable passwords such as “k7Pm-2Qav-9RtL-w4eX”.

  • Permissions as you like

Allow or forbid printing, copying and changes – with or without a password to open.

Frequently asked questions
Are my PDF or password uploaded?

No. Encryption happens entirely in your browser. Neither the file nor the password leaves your device, and nothing is stored.

How secure is the protection?

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256. How secure that is in practice mainly depends on the password: long random passwords like the generated ones are practically impossible to guess.

What is the difference between an open password and permissions?

With a password to open, the content is encrypted and unreadable without the password. Permissions such as “no printing” are respected by most programs, but some programs can ignore them – for confidential content always use a password to open.

I forgot the password – can you help?

No. The password is not stored anywhere and AES-256 cannot be bypassed. Keep it safe, for example in a password manager, and test the file before deleting the original.

Which programs can open the PDF?

All current PDF programs and browsers that support AES-256 – it has been the standard for many years. Very old programs may not be able to open such files.
