Frequently asked questions
How is the ISO week number calculated?

Weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday – the week containing 4 January.

Why can 1 January be in week 53?

If 1 January falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday it still belongs to the last week of the previous year.

How many weeks does a year have?

52 or 53. A year has 53 weeks if it starts on a Thursday – or, in a leap year, on a Wednesday.

Does this match US week numbers?

Not always. US calendars often start weeks on Sunday and count differently; this calculator uses the ISO standard.
