Frontend developer: CV and cover letter examples

2 fully written cover letters, a ready CV with a placeholder portrait and practical tips – open the example and replace the details with yours.

Cover letter examples

Each example is written for a different starting point. Borrow the structure, not the sentences – your own examples and numbers are what make a letter work.

Application for the position of Senior frontend developer

Dear Ms Lewis,

a form that cannot be used with a screen reader shuts people out. I read that sentence in an audit three years ago, and every project since has been shaped by it. On my last project we rebuilt an application portal to meet accessibility standards and made it load faster at the same time.

I have built frontends in TypeScript for seven years, most recently with a component framework and our own design system. I write tests, review code and explain to designers why a 3:1 contrast ratio is not enough. Your work for public services matches what I care about.

Yours sincerely,

Joel Whitman

Application for the position of Junior frontend developer

Dear Sir or Madam,

as a graphic designer I handed designs to developers for years and wondered why half of them looked different in the browser. A year ago I started building them myself and completed a web development course.

My final project is a recipe app with search, favourites and offline mode, tested and deployed. I bring a good eye for typography, spacing and detail, and I would like to learn how larger projects are structured as a junior in your team.

Yours faithfully,

Sinead Hoffman

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

Frontend developers build the interfaces of web applications: components, layouts, forms, state, accessibility and performance. Show code – a repository, a live site, an open-source contribution – and explain the problems you solved.

  • HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript

  • A component framework

  • Accessibility and performance

  • Testing and code review

  • Working with design and backend

Tips for your application

Do

  • Link to code or live projects.
  • Describe problems solved, not just frameworks.
  • Mention accessibility and testing.

Don’t

  • List frameworks without projects.
  • Present tutorials as client work.
  • Ignore design.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. How do you make a form accessible?
  2. How would you speed up a slow page?
  3. How do you structure state in a large app?
  4. Show us a project you are proud of.

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree?

Less than you might think. A maintained repository and an architecture you can explain often matter more.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
