Cover letter examples

Application for the position of E-commerce manager

Dear Ms Peterson,

two years ago our shop converted at 1.1 per cent. Today it is 2.3. I restructured the product pages, cut checkout from five steps to three and worked with customer service to answer the ten most common questions right on the page.

I have run the web shop of a sports retailer with 6,000 products for four years, plus two marketplaces. I work closely with buying, warehouse and marketing and report monthly to the directors. Outdoor gear is my own world – every holiday I spend in the hills.

Yours sincerely,

Jamie Ross

Application for the position of E-commerce manager (part time)

Dear Mr Hansen,

during the pandemic I built an online shop for our small wool shop in three weeks. It now brings in forty per cent of revenue, and I learned everything myself: product photos, shipping, reviews, newsletters.

I am handing the shop over to my successor and would like to bring this experience to a larger business. Your shop is beautiful in person and has room to grow online, and I already have a few ideas.

Yours sincerely,

Shona Baird

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

E-commerce managers look after the online shop: range, product data, campaigns, marketplaces, conversion and returns. Bring numbers – revenue growth, conversion rate, basket value – and show that you understand customers.

  • Experience with shop platforms and marketplaces

  • Analytical thinking

  • Product data and content

  • Online marketing basics

  • Working with logistics and customer service

Tips for your application

Do

  • Give before-and-after numbers.
  • Say how large the shop and channels were.
  • Show cross-team work.

Don’t

  • List tools without results.
  • Quote figures out of context.
  • Forget the customer.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. How would you improve our conversion rate?
  2. Which metrics do you check daily?
  3. How do you deal with high return rates?
  4. Which marketplaces do you know?

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree for e-commerce?

No. Many people come from retail and learned online selling on the job. Results count more than qualifications.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
