Application for the position of Electrician

Dear Mr Hughes,

I finished my apprenticeship with a domestic contractor in March and passed my final assessment first time. I am looking for a firm with a broader mix of work, and your recent commercial fit-outs caught my eye.

Over four years I have worked on new-build houses, kitchen and bathroom rewires and a handful of consumer unit upgrades. I carry out safe isolation without being reminded, complete test certificates carefully and leave a site the way I found it. On one rewire in an occupied home I planned the work room by room so the family never lost power to the fridge or the boiler overnight – a small thing that got us two referrals.

I hold a full driving licence and my own hand tools, and I am happy to travel within the region. I would welcome the chance to come in for a trial day.

Yours sincerely,

Jack Turner

Application for the position of Solar PV and battery installer

Dear Ms Ali,

For the past six years I have worked as an electrician on commercial maintenance contracts, and for the last two I have installed solar PV and battery systems as a side line for our domestic customers. I would now like to do that full time.

I have connected around 40 domestic systems, including inverter set-up, battery commissioning and the paperwork for the network operator. I also fit EV chargers. Customers usually ask the same three questions at handover, so I made a one-page guide with photos of their own system; our office still sends it out.

I am organised, used to working alone or leading a small team, and I hold a current first aid certificate. I am available with one month’s notice.

Yours sincerely,

Priya Sharma

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

Electrical contractors want people who work safely and tidily, test and certify their work properly and are good with customers. Say which kind of work you know – domestic, commercial, industrial, solar – and which qualifications and cards you hold.

  • A recognised electrical qualification for your country and proof of competence

  • Safe isolation, testing and certification done properly every time

  • Experience with the kind of work the firm does: new builds, rewires, solar, EV chargers, maintenance

  • Driving licence and reliability

  • Clear, polite communication with customers

Tips for your application

Do

  • Name the type of work and give numbers (installs, rewires, sites).
  • Mention testing and certification explicitly.
  • List cards, licences and certificates.

Don’t

  • Write “all aspects of electrical work” without examples.
  • Leave out your driving licence.
  • Overstate experience you would need to prove on a trial day.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. Talk us through safe isolation.
  2. How do you approach a fault you cannot find?
  3. How do you deal with a customer who is unhappy with the mess?
  4. What kind of work would you like to do more of?

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cover letter for a trade job?

Often a short email is enough, but a few clear paragraphs about your experience and availability make you stand out from the people who only send a CV.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
