Application for the position of Marketing intern (social media)

Dear Ms Clarke,

a year ago I took over our rowing club’s social media account. It had 300 followers and posted twice a month. It now has just over 2,000, and our open day brought in more new members than the club has seen in years. Short training clips and interviews with our oldest rowers did that, not paid ads.

I am in the second year of a business degree, specialising in marketing. I ride past your workshop every morning, and I think your mechanics would make great subjects for short videos.

During term I can work up to 20 hours a week, and full time over the summer. I graduate in eighteen months.

Yours sincerely,

Megan Holt

Application for the position of Digital marketing intern (analytics)

Dear Sir or Madam,

what interests me most is not designing ads but finding out which ones work. My dissertation looks at which metrics small online shops actually need and which simply confuse them.

Before my master’s I spent six months in a small agency, managing search ads for three clients and building monthly reports for their owners. I work with spreadsheets every day and I am comfortable explaining numbers to people who do not like them.

I am available from March for up to 20 hours a week.

Yours faithfully,

Hannah Reid

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

Marketing teams take on students for social media, content and campaign reporting. Show something you made – a society account, a blog, a project – and say how many hours a week you can work and until when.

  • Currently enrolled at university or college

  • Some hands-on experience with social media, writing or design

  • Curiosity about numbers behind campaigns

  • Ability to work independently on a few hours per week

  • Good written English

Tips for your application

Do

  • Say how many hours a week you can work.
  • Link to real examples.
  • Suggest one idea for the company.

Don’t

  • Call yourself “social media savvy” without proof.
  • Quote follower counts without context.
  • Send a portfolio without saying what your part was.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. Which campaign impressed you recently?
  2. How would you measure success on social media?
  3. How many hours can you work?
  4. Which tools do you use?

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
Internship or part-time student job?

An internship is usually a few months full time. A part-time student job runs alongside your studies for a longer period with fewer hours per week.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
