Cover letter examples

Each example is written for a different starting point. Borrow the structure, not the sentences – your own examples and numbers are what make a letter work.

Application for the position of In-house recruiter

Dear Mr Shaw,

four years at an engineering recruitment agency have meant around 25 placements a year, mostly engineers and technicians for mid-sized manufacturers. What I missed was seeing how people were doing a year later. In-house, I can.

My strength is approaching specialists who are not looking to move. I understand enough engineering to talk about someone’s work without embarrassing myself. Your careers page lists thirty open roles in development and production, and I would like to help fill them.

Yours sincerely,

Nadia Ilic

Application for the position of Trainee recruitment consultant

Dear Ms Clarke,

six years of field sales have taught me how to call people who were not expecting my call. Last year I introduced two friends to open roles at my company, and I realised that matching people to jobs suits me better than selling drinks.

I have completed a short recruitment course and know the basics of equality law. Phone work, networking and persistence are my strengths; the specialist knowledge I will learn in your team.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Hill

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

Recruiters find the right people for open roles: writing adverts, sourcing, interviewing, advising hiring managers. Say how many roles you have filled and in which areas, and show that you treat candidates fairly.

  • Experience in recruitment or sales

  • Interviewing and judgement

  • Sourcing on professional networks

  • Comfort with metrics

  • Knowledge of equality law

Tips for your application

Do

  • Give placement numbers.
  • Name your sectors and candidate groups.
  • Show you treat candidates fairly.

Don’t

  • Call yourself a “people person” and stop there.
  • Leave out metrics.
  • Mention confidential client details.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. How do you approach someone who is not looking?
  2. How do you measure recruitment success?
  3. What does equality law mean in practice?
  4. How do you handle a hiring manager with unrealistic demands?

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
Can I move into recruitment without an HR degree?

Yes. Many recruiters come from sales, customer service or psychology. A short course on recruitment and employment law plus some referral experience is a good start.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
