Cover letter examples

Each example is written for a different starting point. Borrow the structure, not the sentences – your own examples and numbers are what make a letter work.

Application for the position of Junior copywriter

Dear Mr Fox,

twelve words for a poster at a bus stop where people wait forty seconds on average: that brief kept me busy for two weeks during my traineeship at a creative agency. The campaign ran in four cities last autumn.

After my English degree I spent a year writing websites, ads and social posts for clients from an organic grocer to an engineering firm. I enjoy getting into subjects I knew nothing about. Three samples are attached.

Yours sincerely,

Josie Weller

Application for the position of Senior copywriter (in-house)

Dear Ms Larsen,

eight years in agencies mean thirty clients, hundreds of taglines and the feeling of only just getting to know a brand when the project ends. I want to write for one brand and shape it over years.

I have conceived and written campaigns for sports, tourism and mobility brands, most recently as creative lead with two designers. I have used your gear on trips in Norway for years, and I think I know how your customers feel when the tent holds in a storm.

Yours sincerely,

Ollie Matthews

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

Copywriters write ads, websites, product copy, taglines and social posts. Agencies read your cover letter as your first writing sample. Keep it short, specific and in your own voice, and attach three to five strong samples.

  • Portfolio of writing samples

  • Strong language and a feel for tone

  • Conceptual thinking

  • Range of formats

  • Working with designers and clients

Tips for your application

Do

  • Treat the cover letter as a writing sample.
  • Attach three to five strong pieces.
  • Show range and your own voice.

Don’t

  • Clichés – of all places, here.
  • Long letters.
  • Samples without saying what your part was.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. Which of your pieces do you like best and why?
  2. How do you handle client edits?
  3. Write us a tagline for … on the spot.
  4. How do you research a subject you do not know?

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
How many samples?

Three to five good ones are enough. Add a line on the brief, audience and your role for each.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
