Cover letter examples

Each example is written for a different starting point. Borrow the structure, not the sentences – your own examples and numbers are what make a letter work.

Application for the position of Product photographer (in-house studio)

Dear Mr Rott,

on a good day I shoot 120 products, cut out, colour-accurate and so that a chair on the listing looks the same as in the customer’s living room. I have done product photography for an online homeware retailer for four years.

I work with studio flash, tethered capture and a standard workflow through to delivery to the shop. Larger products and room sets are what draw me to your studio. My portfolio is attached.

Yours sincerely,

Leyla Aksoy

Application for the position of Photography assistant

Dear Ms Kaya,

setting up lights, running cables, managing the tether, fetching coffee if needed: I know what assisting looks like and that is exactly where I want to start. My photography degree taught me that I prefer people in front of the camera to still life.

Your corporate portraits have a calm I rarely see. I would love to learn how you manage that in twenty minutes with a nervous chief executive.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Engel

Good to know

Your application in three steps
  1. Add your own photo – or none

The example uses an illustrated placeholder. Replace it under “Choose photo” in the editor, or remove it: in the UK, US and many other countries a CV photo is not expected.

  2. Replace the details

Name, contact, jobs, skills: everything is filled in and can be overwritten field by field.

  3. Save as PDF

The PDF is created in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account needed.

What employers look for

Photographers work in studios, for online retailers, agencies, publishers and companies. You need an eye, technique (light, camera, editing), speed for volume work and a way with people in front of the lens. A curated portfolio is your most important document.

  • Curated portfolio

  • Lighting, camera, editing

  • Volume or portrait work, depending on the role

  • Client contact

  • Training or degree, not always required

Tips for your application

Do

  • Tailor the portfolio to the role.
  • Describe technique and workflow.
  • Give volumes and speed.

Don’t

  • Hundreds of unsorted images.
  • Images you do not have rights to.
  • Technique without an eye.
Typical interview questions

Prepare a short, honest example from your own work for each one.

  1. How would you light a glossy product?
  2. How do you relax a nervous sitter?
  3. What is your post-shoot workflow?
  4. Which image in your portfolio is your strongest?

Salary expectations

If the advert asks for your salary expectations, give an annual gross figure or a range you have researched – through pay scales, salary surveys from public sources or people who do the job. If it does not ask, leave pay out of the letter; it will come up in the interview.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a qualification?

Not always. A degree, assisting or a career change are all common routes; the portfolio decides.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

It depends on the country. In the UK, Ireland and the US a photo is usually left out to avoid bias, and many employers prefer CVs without one. In Germany and some other countries it is common but optional. If you use one: recent, friendly, plain background, dressed as you would be on a good day at work.

Can I copy the example letters?

Yes, they are free to use. But recruiters read a lot of letters – one with your own examples, numbers and a real reason for choosing this employer will always do better. Use the examples as scaffolding and write the sentences yourself.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The CV and the letter are created in your browser. Nothing is stored unless you switch on “Save the draft” in the editor – and then only on your device.
